Honda owners, take note: American Honda has issued a recall for three popular 2025 models—the XL750 Transalp, Africa Twin 1100, and Rebel 1100—due to a potential oil leakage issue that could compromise rider safety.

Crankcase Sealing Bolt Issue May Lead to Rear Tire Oil Contamination

According to documentation filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall stems from improperly manufactured crankcase sealing bolts. These defective bolts may allow engine oil to seep out, possibly reaching the rear tire during operation.

This kind of oil contamination can drastically reduce rear wheel traction, which Honda warns could “increase the risk of a crash or injury.” Approximately 1,016 motorcycles, or around one percent of the affected production range, may be impacted by this issue.

Issue Traced Back to Late 2024 Factory Inspections

Honda’s internal investigation began after two CB1000 models were flagged during routine inspections at a Japanese manufacturing plant in late 2024. Following further analysis across global markets, Honda identified the root cause: a specific batch of sealing bolts manufactured outside required specifications due to production errors.

Recall Applies Globally — Riders Outside the U.S. Should Stay Alert

Although this recall originates in the United States, Honda advises international owners to contact local customer service representatives to verify whether their bike is affected. The recall includes 2025 model-year Rebel 1100s, Africa Twin 1100s, and XL750 Transalps produced before February 17, 2025, when the issue was corrected on the assembly line.

Key Dates and Service Instructions for Affected Owners

American Honda notified its dealership network on May 27, 2025. Notifications to registered motorcycle owners are scheduled to begin on or around July 25, 2025. Affected customers will be instructed to visit authorized Honda Powersports dealers for a free replacement of the faulty bolts.

Owners who previously paid out-of-pocket for the same repair may qualify for reimbursement if proper documentation is provided.

For questions or assistance, Honda owners in the U.S. can contact Honda Customer Service at 1-866-784-1870. Alternatively, contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY: 1-888-275-9171) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
