Honda has made history with the 2026 CB125F, becoming the first manufacturer to equip a manual-transmission motorcycle with start-stop (idling-stop) technology—a move designed to reduce emissions and improve fuel economy in daily riding conditions.

Common in cars since the early 2010s and even used as far back as 1974, start-stop systems automatically shut off the engine when stationary and restart it the moment movement resumes. Though Honda has integrated the feature into scooters and automatic motorcycles such as the PCX125 (2010) and Gold Wing DCT Tour (2018), this is the first time it has appeared on a standard, manually operated bike.

The CB125F’s start-stop system leverages existing tech, including a starter-generator unit first introduced in the 2021 model. The 2026 update adds a new higher-capacity battery and an upgraded ECU, which monitors variables such as speed, throttle position, clutch engagement, engine temperature, and whether the side stand is up.

When these conditions align—engine at optimal temperature, bike stationary with the clutch pulled in, throttle closed—the engine is shut off to save fuel. Once the rider twists the throttle, the bike instantly restarts, delivering a seamless experience with minimal lag.

This system also functions in any gear, even if the rider arrives at a stop in fifth gear. However, the system remains inactive until the bike first reaches at least 6 mph (10 km/h)—a measure to avoid unnecessary cutoffs during short stops or warm-up periods.

For riders who prefer full manual control, the start-stop function can also be manually deactivated via a switch.

Honda’s implementation is efficient and simple, with minimal mechanical additions. Its introduction on the CB125F signals the brand’s growing focus on urban efficiency and sustainable engineering, hinting at broader integration of start-stop tech across future manual models.
