Suzuki Motor USA has announced a safety recall affecting specific Suzuki Katana and V-Strom motorcycles due to a headlight compliance issue. Owners of 2020 or 2024 Katana models, as well as 2020 through 2025 V-Strom 1050 units, may be impacted.
According to the manufacturer, the headlight’s upper beam on certain motorcycles exceeds the allowable brightness levels under U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS). This issue, which originated from the headlight supplier, could impair visibility for riders or oncoming traffic, increasing the risk of an accident.
Headlight supplier Koito Manufacturing Company determined that some headlamp assemblies “[exceed] the maximum allowable photometric intensity limit at test point 4D-V.” The problem was linked to protective tape applied during production, which shifted the reflector by about 0.5 degrees. This small adjustment caused the upper beam to shine brighter than federal standards permit.
Suzuki Motor USA estimates that 1,543 motorcycles are affected by this defect, representing nearly half of the models under review. The breakdown includes:
- 127 units of the 2020 Suzuki Katana
- 23 units of the 2024 Suzuki Katana
- 1,393 units of the 2020–2025 Suzuki V-Strom 1050
Following Koito’s findings, Suzuki Motor Corporation conducted its own internal tests, confirming the issue. On July 31, 2025, the company decided to initiate a formal safety recall. Notifications to authorized dealers were scheduled for August 22, 2025, with letters to registered owners expected around August 29, 2025.
As part of the recall, Suzuki dealers will replace noncompliant headlamp assemblies with updated versions that meet FMVSS standards. A stop-sale notice has also been issued for all new and pre-owned affected motorcycles within Suzuki’s dealership network.
